Homework Topics: Unit 3 HIS 269 The Civil War & Reconstruction
Pick Topic A or B
A. The Quiet Little Man
First, briefly summarize Ulysses Grant's background prior to the war and his rise to the top of the Union army. Suggested questions to consider: Considering his past, why was he an unlikely hero? What is the truth behind his reputation as a drunk? How did Grant acquire the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant? How did Grant achieve success at Vicksburg and Chattanooga? What were Grant's exceptional qualities as a commanding general?Next, how did Grant defeat Lee in Virginia? Grant said he would hold on against Lee "if it takes all summer." It took nearly a year. Summarize Grant's advance from the Wilderness to Petersburg, and explain why McPherson says Grant has been given a "bad rap" for his so-called "war of attrition" against Lee in Virginia (also see Lion v. Fox essay).
Finally, explain how Lee's Army was finally captured in April 1865, and explain how Lee's decision to surrender, Grant's terms of surrender, and the way Lee's defeated army was treated at Appomattox, all helped set the stage for reunion.
B. The Hard Hand of War
First, describe General William T. Sherman. What sort of a fellow was he? Summarize his background and rise to become Grant's right arm.Next, what were Sherman's methods and objectives in his march from Atlanta to the sea and up through the Carolinas? Critics say Sherman needlessly (and excessively) employed the concept of "total war" in order to demoralize the civilian population as well as the Confederate Army; but others say that his mobile tactics and "indirect approach" were better than either siege warfare or costly head-to-head battles. What is your assessment of Sherman and infamous March to the Sea? Separate out fact from fiction.
Third, describe General Phil Sheridan and explain how he became Grant's left arm. Evaluate his "scorched earth" campaign in the Shenandoah Valley.
