Formatting the References Page in Microsoft Word 2007

Before you start typing, set the line spacing, the margins, the hanging indent, and turn off automatic underlining for web addresses. To see a sample APA References page, consult page 459 of A Writer's Reference, 6th ed. 2007.

General Formatting

  1. At the top of the page, center and type References.

  2. Double space the entire page.

Double Space

  1. Click on the Home tab

  2. Go to the Paragraph group in the center of the page

  3. Click on the diagonal right arrow

  4. Under Line spacing, click on double

Set the Margins

  1. Click on the Page Layout tab

  2. Click on Margins

  3. Click on Normal (the default is 1 inch on all sides)

Set a Header

  1. Click on the Insert tab

  2. Go to the Header & Footer group

  3. Click on Page Number

  4. Click on Top of Page

  5. Click on Plain Number 3

  6. Find the curser on top of the page number

  7. Type your last name and a space

  8. Click on the Design tab

  9. Go to the Options group

  10. Check the box for Different Page

Hanging indentations

  1. Click on the Home tab

  2. Go to the Paragraph group in the center of the page

  3. In the Special box, click on hanging

  4. In the By box, set .5" for the indentation.

Remove Underlining from Web Addresses

  1. Click on the Insert tab

  2. Go to the Links group

  3. Click on Hyperlink

  4. Click on Remove Link
