Search Engines

The search engines listed here represent a small portion of the total number available. Remember no one search engine covers all the web. Overlap studies show that about half the pages covered in any one search engine database exist only in that database. So, if you don't find what you are looking for with one, try another.

The Biggest Search Engines:
These search engines cover between one billion and two billion pages.

  • AlltheWeb - Motto is "find it all" and it comes in close to Google in number of pages indexed. Allows you to limit your search to news, pictures, video, audio or ftp files. Allows you to search in 49 different languages. This is a pure search engine and does not include any extra features such as directory or personals or news links.
  • Alta Vista - Allows you to limit your search to images, news, audio or video. The only  language option is Spanish. It as not as pure a search engine as Alltheweb or Google. In addition to a directory there are links to weather, shopping, personals, and travel sites. In number of pages covered it is smaller than either Google or Alltheweb.
  • Google - Allows you to limit your search to images or news. One special search option is the ability to search Usenet news groups. Also allows you choose one of several different languages. There is a search directory, but no other features.
  • Teoma - Motto is "search with authority." Claims to use a revolutionary approach to give the most relevant results. A pure search engine, there are no extra features. It is a new search engine and search options are limited. For example, you cannot search by file type and you are limited to a choice of ten languages.

Other Search Engines:
These search engines are smaller in coverage than the four listed above. With these, however, there are number of extra features such as news, weather, personals, email, sports, games and movies.

Meta-Search Engines - Also known as multiple or mega-search engines. A meta-search engine searches several single-search engines at once.
