Word of the Week Contest
Brown Library’s first “Word of the Week Contest” was held during
National Library Week, April 13 – 19. We hope to make this
contest an annual event that will coincide with National Library
Week each April.
People were asked to write a clever, funny description for the
word, “thrummy.” Here are a few of the definitions that were
submitted; the winning entries appear at the beginning of the
list.
*Thrummy
is a word used sarcastically about a food, when you say it like
“yummy,” but it really makes you want to throw up. Example: “Do
you like my cooking?” “Yeah, it was thrummy.”
*Thrummy is the occurrence of three mummies found lying
together in a pyramid.
*Thrummy describes something that passes straight through your
system without going through regular digestive stages. Example:
“I love eating kiwi but it just goes straight thrummy.”
*Thrummy means excessive finger action on a stringed instrument
resulting in indistinct musical sounds. Example: “The thrummy
sounds and motions of the Spanish guitarist confused my ears and
blurred my vision.”
*Thrummy is what you are when you are thirsty and craving some
yummy food.
*Thrummy is a political tactic that unsuccessfully tries to
hide a mistake --- easily found by the loud leaks to the media,
as in “It was a major thrummy.”
*Thrummy means to move in a way that you thrust assorted body
parts out or in the air. It’s related to the “shimmy,” but with
more of a violent throwing of the body in random directions.
Example: “Look at Bobby thrummying! He looks like a sneezing
flamingo.”
“Thrummy”
is an actual word. Random House Unabridged Dictionary
defines it as an adjective meaning “abounding in thrums; shaggy
or tufted, having fringe or loose ends.”
The Contest Winner in the student category is
Alicia Slawson.
Ross Quesenberry, another
Virginia Western student, won honorable mention.
Desiree Frye is the winner in
the staff category.
Congratulations, and thanks to everyone who entered! |
