General Information

The Virginia Western 5,000 Meter Run is sponsored by the Running Club at Virginia Western Community College.  The race was first held in 1982 and currently is scheduled for the first Saturday in May each year.

Between 150 and 250 runners enter the race each year, and over 1,800 individuals have participated in this event since 1982.   Over 4,000 t-shirts have been distributed.

At least five Olympic Trials qualifiers, two collegiate All Americans, and two USATF National Age Group record holders have participated in the race over the years.  The current course record of 14:51.4 was set by Travis Walter in 1994 and it is one of the fastest times ever run on a road course in the Roanoke Valley.

The 3.1 mile course is USATF certified (VA-84 001-CEG).  It starts and finishes on level roads.  The middle of the course winds through a scenic residential area and includes some challenging hills.
